I have been needing a new hard drive for a very long
time. Ever since I ever had Ed. The old hard drive would always make
this very loud, annoying, constant, deafening, clicking all the time! I
was about to go insane. But then a ray of hope came down. I got my
paycheck. It was only for about $60, but I had 2 other checks for about
$30, so I called Office Depot (since they are the only computer store in
town which I really hate! We need a CompUSA!!! AHH!) and they said
that their hard drive that I wanted was about $100. I thought that was a
good deal. So we went and got it.
Installing it was a hassle. At least for me. The monster
was the only computer that had a floppy drive. Ed doesn't have one. Even
though we could go out and get another one for about 50¢
.
We took out the floppy from the Monster, stuck it in Ed, then backed up
some files and put them on the monster, via the network. Then I took out
the old hard drive, and fastened the brackets to the new one.
Take note that the old hard
drive was about twice the size as the new one. When I opened the box and
saw how small it was I said, "It's my baby!" It looked so
cute! One of the reasons the old hard drive was so slow was it was so
big! (5 1/2" wide, 8" long, and 1" high.) But the new one
is smaller (4" wide, 4 1/2" long, 1" high) thus it's
faster.
Then I screwed the hard drive
to the case. When that was all done, I put it the supplied installation
disk. Everything was all ducky, but then it asked for a boot disk. We
didn't make one, so we had to take out the floppy drive, put it back in
the monster and make one, then take the floppy out, put it back in Ed.
Then we found out that we needed more RAM to install Windows. Dang,
those Microsoft people are smart! So we took out some RAM from the
Monster, put it in Ed, and then everything was dandy.
I had set up the cable modem,
then the network, then I had to download some drivers video drivers and
sound drivers from Compaq.com. Then was just installing stuff
like Morpheous, Getright, AIM, MSNIM, and stuff like that.
Then I installed Half-Life. Let
me tell ya, that got rid of a lot of the jerkiness. That new hard drive
helped.
As for the constant clicking,
if you listen closely you can still hear it. But it is not very
loud.
If you were planning on getting
a new hard drive, go for the Western Digital. But if your choices are
limited (like mine were) then you could settle for this.
